For years, the industrial sector has been discussing how fewer and fewer young people choose to study STEM subjects, which has led to a persistent shortage of engineers. At the same time, we have asked ourselves: what are we actually doing to help young people truly understand what modern industry looks like today?

In the past, our company has organized job shadowing days and open house events for employees’ families to show what we really do and what opportunities today’s industry offers. This year, however, we decided to make a small change. Instead of organizing these introductions as separate events, we are now making them a natural part of our everyday working life.

We started by opening our doors to small school groups. The children of our employees are also welcome to visit and bring a friend along to see what we actually do here and what different professions in modern industry look like today.

The first visitors were students from the 6th grade of Tallinn Reaalkool in January. In February, Sten from Pirita Economic Gymnasium spent a day shadowing our Production Director. And last week, Henry from Viimsi Gymnasium spent a day alongside our CEO. The experience brought plenty of positive emotions and curiosity, both for us and for the young visitors.

From time to time we might think: what do these “snowflakes” really know? In reality, they simply need more opportunities to see real life and take part in it. And it quickly becomes clear that many girls and boys grow into motivated young people who are not afraid of hard work—no matter which career path they eventually choose.

MDC Max Daetwyler Eesti AS has successfully achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System certifications.

The ISO 14001 certification confirms that the company systematically manages its environmental impact and operates in a responsible and sustainable manner. The ISO 45001 certification demonstrates that employee health, safety, and proactive risk management are central to the company’s management practices.

For us, this is not just about meeting standards, but about embedding these principles into our daily management and company culture,” said the Managing Director of MDC Max Daetwyler Eesti AS.

As an employer, this reflects a strong commitment to providing a safe and healthy working environment, clear and structured processes, and operations aligned with internationally recognized standards. The certifications underline the company’s values and its dedication to quality and reliability for employees, partners, and customers.

The SwissFactory.Group is a consortium of innovative SMEs with complementary manufacturing and assembly technologies and engineering expertise (www.swissfactory.group). The companies of the SwissFactory.Group work for high-tech industries such as MedTech, GreenTech, semiconductors, vacuum, optics, metrology or aerospace, and traditional sectors such as machinery, energy generation or vehicle industry. It employs around 450 people.

Daetwyler Industries and SwissFactory.Group entered into a strategic partnership in the Spring of 2023. This strategic partnership results in Daetwyler acquiring a stake in SwissFactory.Group while simultaneously integrating its contract manufacturing business into SwissFactory.Group. To this end, SwissFactory.Group is acquiring Daetwyler's factory in Estonia. The Daetwyler facility in Ursenbach will continue to operate until June 30, 2025 after which the operations will wind-down. For the 23 employees of the Ursenbach facility, the following has been planned:

• 17 employees will have the opportunity to move to SwissFactroy.Group and work in the newly established semiconductor business in Bleienbach or in the nearby Aarwangen facility.

• At least two employees will have the opportunity to continue at another Daetwyler company.

• For the remaining employees, solutions will be sought at other companies in the region, where possible.

Ralph Daetwyler, Group CEO, says: “Competition in manufacturing has continued to increase in Europe in recent years. Therefore, integrating our contract manufacturing business into a strong group is the logical solution to this change. It is painful that we have to close the Ursenbach site, but with the SwissFactory.Group we have found a solution that offers the vast majority of the employees a future in an exciting work environment. We will also do our best to help the remaining employees find an employment solution in the area using our extensive network.”

Daetwyler will continue to operate its bending and Microwaterjet machine business as usual. The SwissTec and Rotoflex divisions are also not affected by this change.

2023 comes to a close. We want to express our gratitude to our wonderful clients and dedicated partners. This year presented many challenges, but together, we conquered them all!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Due to the Covid restrictions in previous years, organising events was difficult and we had to find ways to make them happen. This period was characterised by outdoor events and reduced staffing. Several events had to be cancelled.

As a family-friendly employer, we have already held two events for our staff and their families this year. The first event was an open day on the 4th of June, where employees had the opportunity to show their workplace to family members. There were tours to the production facilities and entertainment was provided by a science show. The second event was a lantern tour on the 27th of August, where a 7 km historical walk took us into the tunnels of Peter the Great's sea fortress.

Our traditional summer barbecue was held just before the collective holiday. In previous years, the summer event also included the families of employees, but due to covid restrictions the event became a party for employees only. It proved to be very popular and therefore we will keep the same format in the future.

There were also a total of 3 events for smaller teams. The staff of the production office went bowling together, the assembly department went ATV riding and the welders played motor paintball. With these events, the company wants to promote team spirit and give employees the opportunity to spend time with colleagues outside the work environment.

Also long awaited was the opportunity for job shadowing, which last took place in 2019. This summer, it was once again possible to accompany colleagues and learn about another job in our company. A total of 17 shadowing sessions took place. In some cases the employees also had the chance to get involved and try out a new skill.

This year, on the 2nd of December we will be holding a company Christmas party again. All employees together with their partners are cordially invited.
